Driving Licence Translation

Drive legally in Australia with a NAATI certified translation of your foreign driving licence

If your driving licence is in Spanish, you'll need a NAATI-certified English translation to drive legally in most Australian states and territories. This applies whether you're a tourist, an international student, a working holiday maker, or a temporary resident looking to convert to an Australian licence.

A certified English translation covering your full name, date of birth, licence number, issue and expiry dates, issuing country, and vehicle categories. There will also be a photo of your original licence, so they can be compared side-by-side.

The translation includes my NAATI stamp and signed accuracy declaration. Delivered digitally as a PDF, with hard copy available on request.

Each Australian state has its own rules around how long you can drive on an overseas licence and when you must convert. For example, permanent residents in NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania generally have three months to convert. Victoria allows six months. In all cases, if your licence is not in English, a NAATI certified translation is required at the point of conversion.

State-by-state context

Temporary visa holders driving in Australia on their overseas licence. Permanent residents converting a foreign licence to an Australian licence at state transport authorities such as VicRoads, Service NSW, or Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads. Delivery drivers signing up with platforms like Uber Eats, DoorDash, Menulog, or Amazon Flex — these platforms require a NAATI-certified translation if your licence is not in English. Rental car hirers — most agencies require a formal translation rather than an International Driving Permit alone.
